Just two miles from Monticello, Ashlawn-Highland is yet another historical gem in Charlottesville.  Thomas Jefferson chose this site for James Monroe, fifth President of the Untied States, because he wanted his friend to be within his view. Owned by the College of William and Mary, the estate was origionaly named Highland by Monroe and later called Ashlawn by a subsequent owner.  It carries the title of both names today and serves as a museum, working farm and performance site for the arts. 

  • Open daily November through March from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April through October from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adults $14, Seniors $12, Youth $8. The address is 2050 James Monroe Parkway, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
  • The house tour lasts approximately 35 minutes.  These tickets are not timed like Monticello.
